Placemaking, Health and Fitness, and Economic Development in the Historic Greenwood District

GreenwoodGo is a new project spearheaded by Bill White, the Executive Director of the Historic Greenwood District. The project aims to promote placemaking and art as a way to get people moving in the area to create a healthier community, as well as educate people on the vastness of the Historic Greenwood District, which spans 40 blocks.

What Is GreenwoodGo?

The GreenwoodGo project came about as a response to the Black Lives Matter Mural being abruptly removed from Greenwood. The only such removal across the nation during the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd. The mural brought people to the district in ways that are rarely seen and it highlighted the importance of art in outdoor spaces as well as the need for people to have safe and accessible places to walk, bike, and exercise. GreenwoodGo seeks to address these needs by creating a network of paths and trails that connect residents and visitors alike to the entirety of the Historic Greenwood District.

Why is GreenwoodGo important?

The Historic Greenwood District is a significant part of Tulsa's history and cultural heritage, and the GreenwoodGo project seeks to highlight its importance by creating a sense of place that encourages people to explore and invest in the area. By promoting health and fitness, placemaking, and economic development, the project has the potential to benefit the community, tourism, and businesses in the area.

What are the goals of GreenwoodGo?

The goal of phase 1 of the project is to highlight the vastness of the Historic Greenwood District that may otherwise be unknown for locals and visitors to the city of Tulsa. The greenline of paint and art that will highlight the area will make way for walking, running, biking, and exploring, while also encouraging investment in the area. Phase 2 of the project will focus on creating additional public art installations and developing programming to engage the community.

How will GreenwoodGo impact the businesses in the area?

GreenwoodGo will have a positive impact on businesses in the area by creating more foot traffic and increasing visibility. The project will also help to attract new businesses to the area and create a sense of place that encourages people to stay longer and explore the areas in their neighborhood that are in or border the Historic Greenwood District. By promoting economic development in the area, the project has the potential to create jobs and opportunities for local residents.
